- Cheryl Unterslak On the last Sunday of every month Talmud Torah Generations has a parent-child learning session at the Holocaust Centre. The parents and children all love the material produced by Rabbi Vegoda, and they thoroughly enjoy the learning sessions. It’s wonderful to see the parents learning brachot, middot, and about famous Jewish personalities together, and hearing them discussing what they learnt.
The learning sessions take place on Sundays at 4pm and the dates for the rest of this year are as follows: 27th July, 31st August, 21st September, 26th October and 23rd November.
If you have not attended yet, come and bring the children and enjoy. Refreshments are always served.

Talmud Torah Generations had their first parent and child learning session on Sunday the 23rd of February at Moriah and it was a huge success with twenty children and their parents in attendance.
Rabbi Vegoda has worked hard to produce an incredible A4 sized booklet for Talmud Torah Generations lessons. The booklet is in colour with stories told in cartoon form, as well as in beautifully written narratives and all teaching about middot (Good character traits). Each week they are also introduced to a different Torah personality. This month our learners, parents included, leant about Rabbi Aryeh Levin in Israel, and about having empathy for others. In the section on prayer they learnt about the mode ani prayer that we say in the mornings. The prayer was given in Hebrew, English and phonetics so that the children could go home and learn it.Added to the lesson was a beautiful explanation of the prayer.
All three classrooms were full, so from next month we are changing our venue. The Talmud Torah Generations parent and child learning sessions will now take place once a month in the lecture room of the Holocaust Centre and the Durban Jewish Club. The sessions will be, as always, be from 4pm to 5pm.
The next session will be on the Sunday the 23rd March. We invite the parents and children to come down to the Jewish Club, perhaps enjoy a delicious meal at the Circle café, and then to come and attend the learning session. Light snacks will be provided.
The Talmud Torah team look forward to seeing you there!

Well done to all the participants of the first term quiz who all got 100% and were given Toy Zone vouchers as prizes! It is amazing to see such commitment from everyone. For those of you who do not know, Talmud Torah: Generations happens on Sunday afternoons at Moriah and is focused on providing both the time and the material to enable parents to learn with their children. Everyone who attends receives an amazing booklet put together by Rabbi Vegoda. The booklet has 3 interactive sections: the first talks about an aspect of the weekly Torah portion, the second presents a moral dilemma to be discussed and the third teaches about mitzvot. Each section is written in a fun and exciting way and everyone can take something out of it! It is amazing to watch parents learning with their children and to see how much both the parents and the children get out of the experience! At the end of the first, second and third terms, a quiz takes place on the booklets of the last two weeks.. Everyone who attends receives a prize just for taking part and everyone who gets 100% for the quiz receives a toy voucher! Everyone from grade 6 and below is invited to attend! At the end of the fourth term every year there is a very exciting draw for 2 tickets to Israel – one for the winning child and for one parent. Every time you attend Talmud Torah: Generations during the year, your child receives one entry into this draw! So the more you attend, the greater your chance of winning!
