Yom Tov Services packed the shul to the rafters, from Yom Kippur to Simchat Torah.
The UJC sukkah proved to be a popular place for people to gather and many out of towners once again made the UJC their destination
for holiday services. Yeshiva College students from Johannesburg enhanced the services over Simchat Torah, well done boys!
Megan Gering celebrated her Bat Mitzvah this month at the UJC. Mazel Tov to the entire family on this milestone.
The UJW hosted their annual Challah bake this year at the UJC. The Challah bake which always proceeds the Shabbat project, the
brainchild of Chief Rabbi Dr. Goldstein was a huge success.
The new and expanded venue at the UJC proved to be exceptionally successful and record numbers of ladies attended this excellent
event. Yishar Koach to the UJW ladies for all of their involvement and organization.

B
eth Shalom residents have so enjoyed Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot
and Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah with each other and family
members. Lovelymealswereprepared for these important festivals.
Luckily the weather was quite pleasant and some of our residents were
able to eat their meals in the sukkah. The residents who enjoyed this
experience were namely Dr Issy Fisher, Charlie Hotz, Jeanette Landy,
Gerselle Epstein and Joyce Rogoff.
Our residents did well over Yom Kippur and quite a few spent time at
Shul. We are proud to announce that all the able bodied men from the
Home came to the Service and made up a Minyan. Mr Charlie Hotz
received the Honour during the Neilah.
Beth Shalom would like to advise that the Home is now in receipt of a Section 18a Certificate as from 22 July 2016. This means that
upon receipt of a donation to the Home, Beth Shalomwill issue a tax deductible certificate to the donor. Donors will be able to claim
the tax deduction from South African Revenue Services upon submitting their tax returns and including the certificate. This has taken
many years to be approved but we are happy that the Home is now registered for this purpose.
We have been blessed with having many couples move into the Home. This has made the Home even more enjoyable and social. Mr
Rod and Shirley Palte are the newest members to the Home. They have adapted well to the life at Beth Shalom and are extremely
happywith the service. Shirley is still working and feels fulfilled as a result of this. We also have Mr Hymie and Rhona Goodman as well
as Mr Mendel and Betty Green. They have all decided to come back to their Jewish roots and feel a part of the Beth Shalom family.

The Young Israel Centre had a very fun and busy chaggim period.
The house was constantly filled with people enjoying each other’s
company as well as delicious meals.
The Young Israel Centre hosted second night Rosh Hashana for
some of the young families in the community. It was a relatively quiet
evening as far as dinners go at the Young Israel Centre, with 20
adults and children attending.
As usual Sukkot was a bustling one. With the help of many people,
we put up a double Sukkah and filled it up with as many chairs as we
could. First night Sukkot we hosted a young family braai with close to
40 people attending. It was a wonderful evening with the Sukkah filled
to capacity. Thank you to Rabbi Lebowitz for organising the evening.
On Sunday the 23rd of October four enthusiastic high school
students from Maharsha school in Johannesburg arrived to spend
the last few days of Sukkot with the Durban community. On the
Monday the Young Israel Centre hosted them as well as other young
families in the community for lunch. Activities, including a Jewish
30 seconds challenge, were played after lunch. Thank you again to
Rabbi Lebowitz for organising these. The students from Meharsha
certainly went back to Johannesburg with some exciting stories.
The Young Israel Centre also hosted the four students for a light
supper after the Simchat Torah festivities at Shul.
