The Sisterhood of Temple David held its AGM on 5th July at the Durban Jewish Centre. The outgoing chairman, Elizabeth Groot,
presented her comprehensive report on the year’s activities, and treasure Fran Myers gave an equally accurate and concise report on
the work of Sisterhood in the financial sphere.
Our guest speaker was Janet Burgess, the National Donor Liaison for National Sea Rescue Institute. Most of us heard for the first time
just how exacting and often exciting work this organization has done in the 40 years since it’s founding, with volunteers. This includes a
great deal of training, and the youth in particular are educated by talks to the general public. We really enjoyed and appreciated having
Janet with us.
T
he 2016 Biennial Conference of the
South African Union for Progressive
Judaism was held over the weekend
of 14, 15 and 16 July in Cape Town and
was hosted by the Progressive Jewish
Congregation at Temple Israel. The
congregation has 3 synagogues and the
services and conference meetings were
held at 2 of these.
The Durban delegation consisted of Lorna
Harris, co chair of the DPJC, Antony Arkin,
vice chair of the SAUPJ and chair of the
East Coast Region of the SAUPJ, Aidan
Francis, Netzer representative and Diane
McColl, administrator of the DPJC and
Education liaison officer of the SAUPJ.
The conference was attended by delegates
from Progressive Jewish congregations in
Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town and
East London as well as a large contingent
of international delegates from America,
Canada and Israel.
During the conference issues of concern
to the Progressive Jewish movement in
South Africa and its relationship to the
World union for Progressive Judaism were
discussed and resolutions on Minhag, the
role of women, the significance of Israel for
South African Jewry and education were
taken.
Keynote addresses were delivered by
Rabbi Joel Oserin, Vice-president Emeritus,
International Development Department of
the World Union for Progressive Judaism
and Carole Sterling, Chair of the WUPJ.
On Saturday night all delegates took part
in a 67 Minutes for Mandela programme,
making sandwiches, soup and knitting
gloves. Everyone, in particular the
international delegates, felt that this unified
effort to honour Nelson Mandela and to
practice real Tikkun Olam was a highlight of
the conference.
