Water Conference
Kosher cooking classes
The Israel Embassy in South Africa held a conference on water for South African government officials, ministers and municipal heads of
services at the Umhlanga Jewish Centre.
The day-long conference consisted of presentations and forums in the morning, and one-on-one meetings with Israeli service providers and
leaders in the water technology sector.
Also attending the conference were representatives of companies offering innovative water technologies such as shade balls for reservoirs
to prevent water loss through evaporation, desalinization solutions, toxin absorbers from used grey water, gravel pit filtration, aeration and
microbe activation, rain cloud seeding, and more.
Tracey Friedman introduced a new program at the UJC. Kosher cooking classes which happen each month and are presented by a different
guest chef. This month Dina Zekry presented a class ‘everything to do with chickpeas’.

Union of Jewish Women
UJW – DURBAN BRANCH 78TH AGM
How time flies! It is already over 2 months since the
Union’s AGM and at the age of 78 still going strong.
After a successful 3 year term of office Bev Levy has handed over the reins to Tessa Goldreich who will, no doubt, take the organization
from strength to strength. Bev’s report made mention of projects for the Jewish and General communities in Durban and Treasurer;
Gaynor Lazarus’ report was well presented. The highlight of the morning was, again, the outstanding talk by Mary Kluk whose information
about the work being undertaken by the SAJBD is always very interesting.
Our thanks to ALL the ladies who have helped knit 100’s of beanies for
soldiers in the Israeli army. They are delighted to receive the parcels as
during their winter every bit of help to keep warm is most welcome. The
latest parcels were delivered by Tanya Altshuler and Bev Selikow.
Learners from rural schools visiting the Durban Holocaust Centre are “treated” to a freshly made
sandwich and juice on arrival. Committee members generously provide the eats and the UJW sponsors
the juice and in some cases the sandwich ingredients. We are very grateful for the assistance given by
UJW members at Beth Shalom, the students at Akiva College and Eden College.

OBITUARY - FAY WITTEN
EN z’l
“Aunty Fay”, as she was affectionately known as to UJW committee members and friends, passed away during June, just
before her 91st birthday.
For the past year Fay was a resident of Beth Shalomwhere she endeared herself to management, staff and residents alike.
Fay was a member of the UJW for several years and active on the Adult Ed sub-committee before joining the Executive in
1982 on which she served as Co-Chair during 1984/85. For more than 26 years Fay was convener of our Friendship Club
and participated in several UJW outreach projects.
Fay had a “soft spot” for the underdog and on visits to projects was always surrounded by people, whether children or
adults, and she always had time for each one. She was kind, considerate and sympathetic to everyone, always looking for
the good in any individual and her sound advice was given with love and concern.
Fay was a recipient of the Freda Kapelus and Sara Sloman awards for outstanding dedication and commitment to the Union.
“Aunty” Fay z’l was a lady to the end and she is going to be sorely missed. We all cherish the memories we have of time
shared with her. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Hilton and Ilana.
