COMMUNITY NEWS
By Jen Hackenbruch
The SAJBD KZN Council held a luncheon in February to honour The Victor Daitz Foundation’s contribution to the renovations, at the
Durban Jewish Club. Special guests included Sam Abrahams, Chairman of the Foundation, and Brian Moshal, Managing Trustee, to-
gether with other Trustees of the Foundation. Members of the KZN Council Executive were present, as well as contractors who were
involved in the renovations. Jeremy Droyman (president of the KZN Council) paid tribute to the ongoing generosity of the Foundation and
their commitment to the Jewish community in KwaZulu-Natal. John Patlansky (KZN Council member responsible for the DJC) outlined
the many projects that had been made possible by the Foundation’s generosity. Sam Abrahams responded on behalf of the Foundation,
saying that he was impressed by the many community events taking place at the Durban Jewish Club, and stressed the importance of
the Club in bringing the Jewish community in Durban together. Jeremy Droyman displayed the plaque that would be mounted at the Club.
The second cohort’s first month in South Africa!
It’s unbel ievable that it has already been a month since we got
here. We have learned a new culture and traditions, we have met
new people and hosted them in our home, we have visited new
places, and we have made new best friends for l ife.
We are so happy to wake up every morning and start the day in
our various projects. We are very excited for the next month, and
looking forward to starting new projects and new activities.
OUR PROJECTS
OUR NEW YOUTH MOVEMENTS
In the past month we have established new
youth movements in schools in Amaoti - a
township in Durban - and in Tumaini - a newly
established facility for refugees. We run our
activities once a week, every day with a
different group and on different subjects.
Our Youth movements will follow a syllabus
– teaching about community, responsibility,
local heroes and personal strengths, amongst
other things. Eventually, we aim for these youth
to run the movements themselves.
I CARE
“I Care” is an NGO where boys who have left
their homes for various reasons are living on
the street can come anytime and get a meal,
an educational activity, and someone who
will listen to them. We are very lucky to take
a part in this special project. We come every
week to run an educational activity with them,
according to the topic of the month. We have
tried to make this a fun, enriching and creative
space.
It has been amazing to see how involved and
open they are, and how much they like art and
music and learning new games
.
DURBAN CHILD AND YOUTH CARE CENTRE (DCYCC)
We work with two groups within the DCYCC. One of them
is a drug rehabilitation program for teenage girls and the
second is working with some of the orphans in the DCYCC
residential program.
Rehabilitation Project
In this project we are following the steps of the rehabilitation
program. We join once a week to run an enrichment
activity that coincides with the ‘step’ that the girls have
reached. We bring new ideas and lots of energy. Both the
girls and their councilors have received us very well.
Friendly Fences with Umcebo Design
In this project we are working with a group of teenagers
from the DCYCC, and together with Umcebo, we will be
decorating a portion of the Glenwood Park fence. The aim
of this project is to teach the children about team work
and taking responsibility for their environment, as well as
encouraging them to harness their creativity. We have so
far, been blown away by their ideas and natural talent.
