Akiva College were recently invited to participate in the annual Virginia Preparatory School Art Exhibition. This year’s theme
was titled “Whimsical.” Schools from the surrounding Durban North and Umhlanga areas submit the best of their visual art
pieces created by the students for the exhibition. This event was open to schools, parents and the public for viewing. Akiva
College was proud to submit and exhibit artworks from grade 00 to grade 7, all beautifully created in different mediums
by hard working students under the guidance and watchful eyes of their teachers. As a school we continue to encourage
creative expression through the visual arts and maintain that it is an integral part of the students’ holistic development. Akiva
College was able to display their work with alongside some of the best schools in Durban and are immensely delighted by the
calibre of the work produced by their budding artists.
This year Spring Day fell on a beautiful Thursday. Akiva College celebrated the beautiful weather with a “Teddy Bear’s picnic”
in the garden. Each child brought a snack, a blanket and of course a teddy bear. The picnic coincided with a partial solar
eclipse that the children were able to watch using protective eye material..
This last month was a busy time at Akiva College. The school has been preparing for Rosh Hashana and all of the subsequent
Chaggim.
On the Thursday before Rosh Hashana the students arrived at the UJC hall for a fun morning filled with different activities
based around the Chaggim. The children filled apple shaped containers with apples, honey and a shofar shaped chocolate,
made honey biscuits, Rosh Hashana cards, magnets and flags for Simchat Torah as well as listened to stories. The morning
culminated in a Shofar blow off between Mr Friedman and Rabbi Leibowitz. Each child also received a toffee apple to take
home to enjoy over Rosh Hashana.
The next day, a Rosh Hashana ring was held for all the pre-primary classes. This ring was opened up to all children in the
community. Rosh Hashana songs were sung, apples were dipped into honey, and each child made Marie biscuit bee. There
was an air of celebration and unity as all Jewish children participated together.
