Beth Shalom had a wonderful Heritage Day Celebration on the 25th September 2016. The carers all came dressed in their traditional dresses and
sang to the residents in the garden. Then the residents were treated to a wonderful chicken braai, which was thoroughly enjoyed. Weather was
brilliant so everyone mingled in the beautiful gardens.
Our residents had a wonderful Rosh Hashanah, we had plenty of visitors and guests during this period and everyone enjoyed the delicious food,
which was served- a big thank you to our kitchen staff who made this such a success.
We also had a farewell party for one of our Security Guards, Wiseman Ndlovu. Wiseman worked at Beth Shalom for 31 years and decided to take
early retirement. The residents gave Wiseman a party which was enjoyed by staff and residents alike.

Unfortunately it iswithgreat sadness that we saidGood-bye to one of our oldest residents at theHome. Miss Rose Simpson, whowas 107 years.
Here is a small tribute to Rose fromher friend Joan Truscott:
ROSE
Rose one of my best friends despite our vast age differences. We became very close she was quite dependent on me. Rose loved with a fierce intensity
all her 7 siblings that are now deceased, nieces, nephews and their off springs. I used to skype for her to Johannesburg and America. This was her
greatest joy seeing them especially knowing she could never travel so far again.
Rose’s long life was interesting - I wish someone had chronicled it. She spoke about going in a horse and cart before the first motorcar and also about
times before the first refrigerator. Of all the inventions she lived to see she said technology was the best thing. She and I often sat at the computer
looking up different subjects and it amazed her. I showed her the Shtetl her parents came from.
Rose loved the garden and seeing the beautiful plants her late brother Jackie had planted which came into flower. She loved roses.
In her hey-day she and Jacky walked down to the beach, Botanic Gardens and all over. Even of late with her walker she could be seen going up and
down inside and in the garden. A few times we went out the gate and half way round the block. She loved being out, even just seeing the dogs who
barked at us. Rose sacrificed marriage and having a family to help her mother bring up her siblings. She had a sense of humour and said not getting
married and having children is the reason she lived so long.
She loved sitting in the garden with me and watching me do crosswords. The harder I struggled the bigger her smile got, she got perverse enjoyment
of watching me battle.
She was interested in sport, music, reading and until the end her mind as clear. Unlike myself she knew phone numbers off pat. I would ask her for her
phone book and she would simply rattle off the number.
We will always remember our Rose in her tatty little grey hat that she loved. We bought her a smart new one but she wasn’t prepared to wear it.
As I awaited my lift to go to the airport to fly to Israel, Rose looked at me and said“it was good while it lasted”
and Rosie - it was good. As my son said to me“a good life is long enough and a long life is good enough”.
Go peacefully my dear friend you are loved by many and will never be forgotten. We will miss you.
Love Joan.

It could possibly have been the first time that the sound of the shofar rang out strong and bold in the grounds of Mitchell Park
where we had our Rosh Chodesh Elul breakfast and shiur. Songs, stories and lessons are just some of the important elements
that Shlomo imparts to the pupils to enhance their knowledge of each chag. A special thanks to Oz, who generously gave of
his time to ensure our safety as well as for talking to the high school pupils about security. This successful outing culminated in
us having a lot of fun and laughs as we explored the zoo together.
Apples dipped in honey, peanut butter, or chocolate sauce covered with sprinkles and chocolate chips was just one of the
exciting activities we indulged in for Rosh Hashanah. Our talented chef, Mr. Russel Wolman, once again helped to make each
child eats and treats and no chag is complete without the wisdom of Shlomo. We hope that the parents enjoyed the gift their
child created for this important chag - a cute little bee perched on top of a honey jar.
Once again, a big shout-out to all the generous and talented people who always so willingly give of their time, energy and
wisdom to ensure the success of our department. We are blessed!
Until next month.
