Tu BShvat Durban
Rabbi Avidan gave an explanation of the festival. Young learners were each given a JNF Tree Certificate to take home to show that a tree had
been planted in their name in Israel. Leanne Cramer arranged the tree planting – indigenous olive trees were planted
Volunteers of Project 10 were warmly welcomed. We were so delighted to have them with us. The Malvern Scout Troop showed their camp craft
skills which the young children so enjoyed. The presence of the Durban Solid Waste management team was welcomed. Mr Guy Caws, the senior
education officer of DSW, Tom Mseleku and Khetha Mchunu showed visitors around the garden and the centre.
In addition we were honoured to have Mr Richard Pocock the renowned environmentalist and his family Keren, Rachel and Jonah with us. People
in the know remarked how the centre had grown in five years
The Young Israel Centre had a quiet December/January period,
with most people being on holiday and at Machaneh.
A fun and informal braai was held on Sunday 22 January for the
Manchester United Liverpool soccer match. This was a loud and
lively evening, especially with such an exciting match.
The Young Israel Centre continues to host various members of
the Durban Jewish community for informal Shabbat meals and
Sunday Braai get togethers.
Cheder and Bat Mitzvah lessons started again with the 2017
school year.
Cheder lessons focus on Hebrew reading and writing, as well as
some of the daily davening. These lessons aim to enable children
to be able to take part and feel at home in Shul services all over
the world, as well as encouraging conversational Hebrew. If
your children are interested in taking part, contact Jess on jess.

All of the junior and senior primary students at all of the
schools are busy learning about Noah and are all making
the exact models of Noah’s ark with the correct shapes,
dimension as well as the animals and Noah’s family. This
excellent learning activity was designed by our in-house
Rabbi Vegoda who continues to design so much of our
teaching material.
During the year the students will also be making things and
learning about other aspects of Judaism designed by Rabbi
Vegoda.
Our other fantastic in-house Rabbi is Rabbi Garber and I
encourage as many children/teenagers as possible to attend
his Saturday evening lessons in Mishna, and his morning
learning sessions at Crawford.

Netzer Kick Off Event 2017
Netzer Durban started the year with a fun morning doing crafts and had a special visitor!
We felt it would be fitting to bring the new Mazkir (leader) of Netzer South Africa to Durban. To
meet the community and interact with our kids. This then put a face to a name
Marc Nathanson and allowed the parents to chat and see who would be leading
Netzer this year.
After the Saturday morning Shul service, we all got together and made raindrop
sun catchers and clay keyrings. Our day wouldn’t have been complete without
some yummy food along with camp stories and songs. It was a fun morning with
memories being shared and laughter all around.
Netzer Durban is VERY excited for the year to come! We have a jam packed
year planned along with two new leaders, Deni Abergel and Gabriel Harris.

Eden College
Shalom,
Happy New Year to everyone and a special welcome to the new pupils who
joined our Eden family this year.
The December vacation rushed by and it seems as if we all had exciting holidays.
Some of our pupils went to “camp”, others went overseas, and yet others stayed
home and enjoyed the Durban festive season.
As for myself, I was lucky enough to visit my sister who lives in Israel. It was a
wonderful experience and I learnt, saw, heard and experienced so many new
things. Most exciting of all, was that I managed to obtain new material to use in
our Judaica department. I am really looking forward to implementingthesenew
programmes.
Potentially the most interesting initiative is that I made contact with a teacher
from a school called Tali  Alona and we have decided to start a “Pen Pal”
programme between our schools. Our first project will focus on the Chag of Tu
Bishvat. So there is much to look forward to.
Our dedicated preschool teacher Mrs Julie Levy was as keen and enthusiastic
as ever to educate our little ones about all the upcoming Chagim. We are so
lucky to have such a passionate teacher.
A hearty mazeltov to our matriculants on their outstanding results. We know
that they will continue to bring much nachas to their family and the community.
Until next month.
