TheYoung Israel Centre ended off the 2016 year with 2 final functions
The Centre hosted a couple for the Shabbat project who wished to keep Shabbat, as well as hosting Shabbat dinner for 30 people who
were keeping Shabbat in the community. As usual the dinner was a great and successful evening.
We look forward to hosting many more shared Shabbatot and chaggim meals during the year.
On Sunday 26 November the DUHC choir hosted their annual braai at the Young Israel Centre. 25 choir members and their families
enjoyed delicious food prepared by Chef Dave and his team.
Cheder and Bat Mitzvah lessons will be starting again for the 2017 year and we look forward to many hours of fun and learning taking
place at the Young Israel Centre.

Choir braai
At the end of last year, the Talmud Torah students made magnificent hanging balls that showed them about all the days of creation and
the students learnt about Bereishit. The balls were designed by our Rabbi Vegoda, and the children loved making them and learning.
The students also made the most beautiful wooden channikiot with little clay candle holders which were brought in from Israel. The
students put everything together and decorated their channikiot with colours. The students and many of the parents told the Talmud
Torah teachers about how much they loved them and that they so enjoyed using them for Channukah.
When the teachers teach the students each subject, there is always an activity that helps the children to reinforce what they have learnt,
which makes learning FUN!

Dear Editor,
NEW ARRIVAL IN DURBAN
My name is LIONEL GILINSKY, Ex Johannesburg, and I wanted to introduce myself to the Durban community. I
emigrated to the USA (Los Angeles 1997 to 2008), then back to Johannesburg from 2008 to 2012 when I finally
decided to join my family in NEW ZEALAND and I am now back in South Africa joining my partner Maureen Cohen.
I lived on WAIHEKE ISLAND (30 Minutes by ferry) from Downtown AUCKLAND where I joined the Auckland Hebrew
Congregation on arrival.
I saw an opportunity to start a SHUTTLE SERVICE on the Island moving visitors from the Ferry Terminal to the
Vineyards for Wine Tastings and places of interest also I was very involved with the many weddings that the Island is
so popular for. This buisness grew from strength to strength.
Recently I decided to join Maureen here in SA for good and sold this very successful and enterprising business,
which I started from Ground Zero.
I am now starting another chapter in my life by starting a similar business here in Durban/Umhalanga/La Lucia area,
mainly catering for the senior citizens who no longer drive or would prefer not to drive to... this will include all types
of shuttle services to and from any appointment or occasion. For more information please feel free to contact myself
Lionel (072 657 5585) or Maureen (082 508 7741) or WATCH THIS SPACE for more info on this wonderful service to
be offered to the community.
Dear Editor
My name is Peter Harab; and I live in Rockville, Maryland, USA. I am sending this to you, because I am trying to locate family members
who may be part of the Jewish Community in South Africa - or who may have been, at least about 10 years ago. I recently went into
JewishGen.org looking for members of my family with the surname Zablud, who may have survived the Holocaust in Lithuania.
Approximately 10 years ago, Lucille Aronovsky, who I am now absolutely certain is/was a distant cousin of mine, was living in Gauteng,
South Africa. Is there anyone who may be able to tell me if she is currently anywhere in South Africa or if there is any record that she
has moved out of the country or is now deceased--and if she is deceased, if she has any direct descendants currently living in South
Africa? (That was indeed a long question. I am sorry for that!) I really do feel compelled to keep this search going, so that I may get
some closure. I believe that she would be the daughter of cousins of mine who left Vilna, Lithuania, for South Africa--perhaps in the
very early 1900’s.
Thank you so much, in advance, for any help at all that you may be able to provide.
Regards
Peter Harab
