On Tuesday 25 April, the KwaZulu Natal Zionist Council hosted the Durban Jewish community’s Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) ceremony and Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day) celebration, at the Durban Jewish Centre.

Yom Hazikaron took place in the afternoon and was very well attended this year. The flag was lowered, candles were lit and the 24 213 fallen soldiers and 4255 victims of terror of Israel were remembered. Rabbi Zekry spoke about his personal participation in the Yom Kippur war, where he was a driver in a tank unit. About a week and a half into the war, his tank was hit, and he was injured.

He shared with the audience that he didn’t feel special or different from anyone else, going to fight, and being injured. “It’s what Israelis train to do, to defend Israel.” he said. A big thank you goes to Rabbi Zekry for sharing his experience of serving in the Israeli Armoured Corps during the Yom Kippur War.

The proceedings then moved to the main hall which was beautifully adorned in white draping and festive fairly lights. The chairman of the KNZC, Mr Grant Maserow, welcomed all with a short Yom Ha’atzmaut address, during which he highlighted the amazing achievements of the State of Israel in its 75 years of existence.

Our community’s very own Yael Meltz and Arielle Levitan opened the entertainment by singing a song each and leading the community in the singing of Hatikva. Further musical entertainment for the evening was provided by The Chuppah Band, imported specially from the Johannesburg simcha circuit for the occasion. They had the crowd tapping their feet and singing along, with a wide variety of songs in both Hebrew and English. The MC for the night was well known Durban comedienne, Lisa Bobbert, who had everyone laughing at her jokes and marvelling at her singing. As with any Jewish community event, food featured prominently: burgers, falafel, vegetarian biryani, and hot chips, were followed by delicious chocolate brownies and ice lollies.

There was also plenty of entertainment for the kids, with jumping castles, face painting, balloon art, and pet rock painting. For the teens there was a pool table, air hockey and a photo booth. At the end of the evening, nobody left empty handed either – children received stationery sets, and the adults had a choice of keyring torches, stress balls or notebook and pen, all featuring special logos for Israel’s 75th birthday, and marking the 125th anniversary of the South African Zionist Federation.

An enormous debt of gratitude is owed to The Beare Foundation, The Lazarus Family Trust, The Victor Daitz Foundation, the Yad Mordecai Trust, and Israel Centre, for their generous sponsorship of this event. Also, to MRent, for their discount on hired items, and to Rowan Budlender of RBG Studios for sponsorship of the children’s gifts. Without these sponsors, the KNZC would not be able to host this wonderful celebration.

A very big thank you also goes to the volunteers who assisted us with the selling of the food tickets, as well as Jodi Aranoff for helping with decor – we really appreciate your support. To our caterer Damian Veneruso for the excellent food, and the serving thereof, thank you! A special thank you goes to the staff of the Durban Jewish Centre for assisting with the cooking, the setting up and cleaning up of the event and running the bar.
