PRESIDENT’S LETTER

MESSAGE FROM SUSAN ABRO

On the 16th Anniversary of scheduled loadshedding, and despite the fact that the electricity infrastructure for eThekwini has not been repaired to pre-flood levels as a consequence of the fragile nature of the National Grid, the eThekwini Municipality found it “necessary” to revert to the normal load shedding experienced by the rest of the country. The fatal day arrived last week, and with it the confusion over area schedule changes, chaotic changes in our daily routines and so forth, but like the saying goes “this too shall pass”.

Thank goodness we do have moments of comedy. My “mampara of the century” vote is from our new Minister of Electricity who I heard on the radio saying that “loadshedding is a great management tool”!

Once again, we had a month of community celebrations, beginning with Lag B’Omer, where we commemorate the successful revolt against Rome, and remember the great Jewish teacher of mysticism Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who died on this day.

Today Lag B’Omer symbolises the resilience of the Jewish Spirit.

Two weeks ago we celebrated Shavuot. It is our duty to listen to the Ten Commandments and to eat cheesecake!

David Unterslak attended the 75 Anniversary celebrations at the Israeli Embassy on Wednesday, 10 May 2023 on behalf of the SAJBD KZN Council and Grant Maserow and Michelle Campbell on behalf of the KZNC. The celebration was well attended by the various leaders of Jewish organisations in South Africa, as well as dignitaries and clergy.

The celebration was beautifully set up and the food was delicious and varied.

The Israeli Ambassador to South Africa Eli Belotserkovsky spoke about South African relationships with Israel as well as ways to improve relations, and South African Head of the Zionist Council Rowan Polovin spoke out our love of Israel and the desire for peace in Israel and the Middle East.

An added treat was the singing of the Hatikvah by the winner of a competition held by South African Friends of Israel, Themba Masina.

In other news, as we are aware, the Palestinians commemorate “Nakba” and this year is the 75th Anniversary and the word means “catastrophe” and is marked by the Palestinians as the date upon which their community was destroyed as a consequence of the commencement of the State of Israel.

This is usually commemorated in Israel, however, this year the ANC decided to become involved and sent out a pamphlet inviting people to join in marches.

Together with other SAJBD KZN Council meetings, we had an Affiliates Meeting on Monday, 22 May which was great, well attended and I am thrilled to hear the progress in most of our Affiliates.

I attended the Robin Hood Foundation Fundraiser. The speakers were Cindy Norcott, the founder of the Robin Hood Foundation and Matthew Willman, an internationally renowned photographer. They spoke about being “Active Citizens”. They were extremely inspiring!

Sadly, we suffered the loss of few of our beloved community members as well as “rock icon” Tina Turner, who filled the world with inspiration and wonderful music for over sixty years, and I leave you with some motivation from this iconic woman:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their own dreams.”
