ANOTHER PERFECT DAY
For our 28th Annual Charity Golf Day even the weather played its part to ensure another
outstanding success. In the history of this long-standing fundraiser we have only had to
postpone twice due to the course being water-logged. We and our loyal supporters have
withstood howling gales, rain, high and low temperatures. Our very sincere thanks to you
all, as well as our donors and sponsors for the ongoing support.
This year was very special as Sue Jacobson and her son Kalvin were at Golf Day to
present the Gavin Jacobson z’l Trophy and the first prize of Umzolozolo Game Lodge
vouchers to the 2016 Golf Day winners, Pat Mowbeth, Prem Hiralal, Chundan Ramlad
and Marcel Balram.
The UJW 29th Annual Charity Golf Day will be held on Thursday 31st August 2017 at the
Royal Durban Golf Course.

World Jewish Congress - Keeping
us connected in challenging times
Last month, I attended the annual meeting of theWorld Jewish Congress
executive committee, on which I sit as the representative for SA Jewry.
A key focus of the discussions was on ensuring the security of Jewish
communities throughout the world, particularly the smaller ones who
lack the resources to maintain the requisite security levels. The WJC
has established a sophisticated security department that has, inter
alia, established effective channels of communication with constituent
countries and through which it works with the respective countries’
leaderships to identify how and where theWJC can assist.
One of the highpoints of the meeting was an address by Judge Neal
Hendel describing how Israel goes about fulfilling its mission to be
a Jewish state while at the same time striving to uphold the highest
standards of democracy and equality for all its citizens. It is a complex
challenge in a complex society, yet what Israel has achieved and is
achieving in terms of these ideals remains a measure against which all
countries with diverse communities ought to be measured.
175Years of Jewish Life in SA Celebrated
Just beforeYomTov, a series of cultural and educational events to mark
175 years of Jewish life in our country culminated in the opening of a
superb new exhibition on what it has meant to be a Jewish SouthAfrican
over the generations. The SAJBD Cape Council partnered with the SA
Jewish Museum in putting together the exhibition, which has been a
remarkable success and which we hope to bring to the other centres
eventually. Another SAJBD initiative to mark our 175th anniversary
was to devote a special expanded issue of our journal Jewish Affairs
to the subject. The issue, a valuable addition to the growing literature
on our remarkable community, can be viewed online on the SAJBD
website (http://www.jewishsa.co.za/).We are proud of our journal, but
need our community’s support for it to continue. I invite anyone who
is not a subscriber to please consider becoming one. A subscription
to
Jewish Affairs
also makes a meaningful gift, whose benefits can be
enjoyed long after the giving. For more information, contact Shirley on

Post-YomTov Reflections
While for most of us, Yom Tov was an opportunity for rest and
relaxation, for the volunteers and professional staff of the Community
Security Organisation, it was an especially busy time. As always the
CSO’s professional and volunteer workers, worked in conjunction
with the police, maintaining the highest standards of vigilance and
professionalism. For our part, we need to cooperate with and assist
the CSO to the greatest extent that we can, both by complying with
the security recommendations they provide and by unquestioningly
following their directives, particularly when traveling to and from Shul.
One cannot over-estimate the effect good security has in deterring
potential attacks on Jewish lives and institutions. We also need to be
constantly on the lookout for suspicious activity and immediately
report anything out of the ordinary to the CSO on 086 1800 018.
