What is Project TEN?
Project TEN is an international development program that operates volunteer centers in developing areas. We bring together young Jewish
adults from all over the world, to a program that combines volunteer work with local communities and service learning in the fields of
international development, culture, identity and Jewish activism.
Who are the new faces of Project TEN?
Shani Silove the program director, Inbal Magen the education coordinator together with ten volunteers from all over Israel and America. The
volunteers are all young adults who have finished their army service or University studies.
Who are the partners?
The cohort is collaborating with two valuable organizations, The Domino Foundation and The Denis Hurley Centre. The Domino Foundation
seeks to assist and empower the most needy and vulnerable people in various communities. Their programs aim to equip individuals
physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and spiritually to live purposeful lives. The foundation has a wide scope of projects from feeding
programs, early childhood development, baby’s homes, life skills and literacy programs. The Denis Hurley Centre aims to serve the poorest
people in Durban of all faiths, skin colours, and ethnic backgrounds. They work with South Africans, as well as refugees. The Denis Hurley
Centre offers services through their clinic, feeding center, vocational training, and educational support.
How are we making a difference?
At the Domino Foundation, volunteers will be helping children and teachers at the Amaoti Primary 3 School, in Amaoti. There, they will
be helping make lunches for the children, create sustainable educational materials for grade R and host a Maths camp during the holiday
break. At the DHC, they will be creating a daycare for children which will allow children to play and learn while their parents wait in line for
health services. Additionally, the volunteers will help cook and serve food for homeless individuals in Durban. Project TEN is thrilled to extend
their program to South Africa. The volunteers are eager to start with these awesome projects and develop new connections in the Durban
community!

• Mr. and Mrs. H Barkham (nee Adele Cohen) on the birth of a son.
• Regretted to hear that Ian Cohen and Jack Stein had been reported
missing in action and Lieut. Freddy Lapin had been taken prisoner.
• Was happy to report that Philip Silbert who had been reported
missing had returned to his regiment, and that Signaller Alec Wartski
and Sapper Joe Arluck, who had been wounded, were recovering
nicely.
HASHALOM - December 1966 Extracts.
EDITORIAL titled SHADOW OF HITLER,
dealt with the rise of Neo
Nazism in Germany, 25 years after the War.
THE HON. MR. JUSTICE LEON -
Under this heading in bold type,
Hashalom congratulated the Honourable Mr. Justice R. N. Leon, a recent
President of the council of Natal Jewry, on his appointment as a Judge of
the Supreme Court.
After a report on the Annual General Meeting of the club, Hashalom
welcomed 14 new members to the Club. Those were the days! NEW
MEMBERS indeed.
THE THINGS THEY DO -
This was a new heading in Hashalom,
under which the anonymous writer described the activities of THE
CAMERAMAN – Arnold Miller; THE CHEF – Max Rothschild; and THE
MUSIC MAKER – Phil Harber.
It was something of a surprise to come upon a photograph of Mr. B.J.
Vorster, Prime Minister of South Africa shaking hands with the Chairman
of the Club. The picture was apparently taken at a Civic Cocktail Party
on the occasion of the Prime Minister’s visit to Durban to address the
Durban Parliament. The photograph was published “By courtesy of “Die
Nataller!”
PEOPLE’S COLLEGE
was very active 50 years ago. Three such lectures
were reported in this issue of Hashalom. The first was a lecture by Dr.
Jack Usdin on the topic: The Jewish Concept of G-d: The Decline of
Faith. In the chair was Dr. A. Broomberg and the audience was fascinated
by the wide-ranging issues raised by the speaker.
The next lecture was given by Rabbi I. Goss on the subject:
“The Place
of Ritual in Modern Jewish Living”
. Dr. N. Smith was in the Chair and
we are told that this lecture was “One of the most interesting delivered
from a People’s College platform”.
The last in this month’s series was on the general theme
“Is Judaism
facing up to modern problems?”
led by Rabbi Dr. Miller and Mr.
Sam Ernst under the Chairmanship of Mr. A Miller (no relation to the
Rabbi). Rabbi Miller pointed out that the question of Jewish survival
had been debated even in Biblical times and Mr. Ernst made a plea for
more dedicated Jewish leaders and greater educational facilities. “With
knowledge” he said, “Judaism sustains the Jew: without knowledge it is
a crippling burden.”
Well, there you have it. In one month 50 years ago, three cultural
meetings were held in the Club, each was well attended (over a hundred
in the audience each time), and a notable feature of the series was that
each gave rise to “considerable discussion at the close.” Should we not
be ashamed? Is it sufficient answer to say: “There was no television 50
years ago.”?
HASHOLOM December 1941 - Extracts
ENGLISH SPEAKING JEWRY
was the title of the Editorial, which
pointed out that: “One of the profound consequences of the upheaval
in Europe may very well be a radical change in the centre of gravity in
Jewry”. Until then the core of Jewry and Judaism had been based in
Eastern Europe and the Editor foresaw that the core henceforth would
move towards the English speaking countries of the world. The extent of
the Holocaust was not then known but I doubt if anybody in 1941 would
have believed that, 75 years later, the home language of about 50% of the
world’s Jews would be Hebrew!
CHRISTIAN AND JEW
- It was reported that the Home Service of the
B.B.C. had recently broadcast “an extremely forthright discussion” on
the topic of relations between Christians and Jews. With the authority of
the B.B.C., HASHOLOM reproduced the talk delivered by the Rev. W.W.
Simpson. I would like to reproduce the whole article but unfortunately
space will not permit.
APPEAL FOR GREATER INTEREST
- This was the title of the report
of the AGM of the Club and was a direct quotation of the remarks of Mr.
H. Brown, one of the Club’s Vice-Presidents. And that was 75 years ago.
Times don’t really change, do they?
BRILLIANT SUCCESS OF “THE WOMEN”
- A photograph of thirty
members of the cast of the very successful Anne Freed production of the
Clare Boothe Luce hit play was superimposed on the critique by WLS
(assumed by Pundit to have been Bill Stone) which contains thumbnail
comments on some of the performances:
Hannah Friedlander
(Mary)
: “Completely satisfying performance.
Created a woman who was always alive, charming and dignified.”
Eileen McLoughlin
(Sylvia)
: “Another fulsome character study played with
this actress’s customary distinction and zest”.
Myra Patz
(Crystal)
: “Stepped into the part as to the manner born”.
Bessie Linder
(Peggy)
: “Nicely restrained portrayal of a character not
essential to the play except to demonstrate another in the long list of
things about which a woman will quarrel with her husband”.
Althea Fridjhon
(Mrs Morehead)
: “One of the big surprises of the play.
Portrayed her part with considerable dignity and matronly grace”
May Bierman
(Nancy)
: “Not much to do but did that little well”.
Cicily Shagam
(Maggie)
: “Sprang a big surprise on everybody by a splendid
character study which brought a laugh with every line”.
It is apparent that the performances were enjoyed by both cast and
audiences.
WHO ARE BRITAIN’S FRIENDS IN THE MIDDLE EAST?
The
question was posed by Yehuda Zvi and answered by him unequivocally:
none of the Arabs and only the Jews of Palestine.
LOOKING BACK
- This concluded the series, written by Roy Fenhalls
on a South African soldier’s experiences in the North African Campaign.
