Jewish Students Stand Firm during IAW
Those who accept at face value claims that “Israel Apartheid Week”
(IAW) aims at promoting justice, human rights and democracy need
only witness how this annual propaganda circus is actually conducted
to be disabused of such notions. As has become quite apparent,
IAW activists are intent on imposing their views and silencing those
who challenge them, and so it proved this year. The event at Wits
saw a steady stream of provocative incidents aimed at intimidating
SAUJS students and disrupting their activities, including destroying
posters and cutting the power cord to their sound system. At times,
the rhetoric and demonstrations crossed over into open acts of
antisemitism (including one IAW supporter goose-stepping and stiff-
arm saluting and another telling our students that reason why Jews
were killed was because they didn’t know “how to behave themselves
in other people’s countries”).TheWits authorities have been alerted
to these incidents, all of which were captured on video, and hopefully
those responsible for so blatantly flouting the university’s values and
regulations will be called to book.
To the credit of our students, they resisted being provoked into
responding in kind. Instead, they continued to conduct a campaign
pushing peace and dialogue. The Board, as in the past, worked closely
with SAUJS, assisting as much as we could in ensuring that they can
freely carry out their activities. For this year’s counter-IAW campaign,
we combined with the SAZF in bringing out Craig Dershowitz of
Artists 4 Israel, an NGO that promotes peace and social change
through arts and culture, to run a series of graffiti art projects and
workshops in the Johannesburg inner city. We were able to obtain
much publicity for the visit, including organising radio interviews
where Craig referred to his work in promoting peace and co-
existence in Israel. Our professional staff had a number of articles
published in the print media in response to articles trying to push the
Israel-Apartheid analogy, and we were active in combating attempts
to push for an academic boycott of Israeli institutions.
Think before youTweet
Last month, members of our Cape and professional staff attended
the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office/ Hanns Seidel Foundation
discussion on the draft Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill led by
Deputy Minister John Jeffery and Matthew Clayton of the Hate
Crimes Working Group. The Board is a founding member of the
latter body, and Durban-based Alana Baranov has represented us
with distinction on its steering committee. While it is important that
at the official level, the SAJBD enables the Jewish community to be
involved in the formulation of public policy in the area of combating
racism, it is just as important that Jewish individuals do their part by
scrupulously avoiding hate speech themselves. It can happens that
community members are goaded by what they hear and read into
making offensive comments in their turn. However, not matter how
gross the provocation might be, it is never a license to be bigoted,
racist or hurtful. We all have to exercise common decency and avoid
being provoked into saying or writing things that denigrate entire
communities, whether defined by race, ethnicity, religion or other
such grounds.
